Summary:

RANCHI: The fourth edition of waterbird census has started in the prominent waterbodies of Jharkhand . Hence, these birds are settling down in relatively quieter water bodies,” Prakash said, adding that there is an urgent need to restrict human presence in these spots. The detailed report of observations and sightings will be released next month. In January and February 2018, nearly 47,000 birds belonging to 69 species (including 23 migratory) were documented. Cage culture and increased fishing activities are also posing hindrances. The numbers fell sharply from 2017, where 71,000 birds were documented. However, experts have expressed concerns over a new phenomenon where migratory birds are ditching the prominent waterbodies and nesting in relatively smaller ones due to growing human activities such as picnic, watersports, boating and other activities.Prominent waterbodies are picnic hotspots and loud music is often played at these spots..
