Govt adopts 10% quota for EWS category

Ranchi: The Jharkhand government on Thursday adopted the Union government’s proposal to give 10% quota in government jobs and higher education to aspirants from the weaker economic sections of the general category . At present 26% is reserved for Scheduled Tribe, 10% for Scheduled Caste and 14% for Other Backward Castes (OBC) in the state. “Similarly, those having residential plots above 100 square yards in urban local bodies and 200 square yards in panchayat areas will also be excluded,” Khandelwal said. With it, the total reservation in Jharkhand rose to 60%. The present 10% is over and above the existing 50% quota.The state cabinet, led by chief minister Raghubar Das, gave its approval to the department of personnel and administrative reforms’ note for adopting the proposal.Speaking to reporters after the meeting, additional chief secretary K K Khandelwal said the quota will be applicable for aspirants whose annual household incomes are below Rs 8 lakh.Khandelwal pointed out that general category aspirants who have farm lands of five acres and above, homes having size of 1,000 square feet and above will be excluded..
