School girls being trained for self-defence

SHILLONG: The West Khasi Hills district administration has launched a month-long self-defence training programme for schoolgirls and roped in former karate world champion Linza F Syiem to conduct the training. The National Crime Research Bureau recorded a 6.8% rate of crime against women in 2015 in the district, which doubled in 2016. Delhi Police had earlier initiated a similar programme to train girls to fight back when harassed.The district has witnessed a high incidence of cases related to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), which have been on the rise..
