BJP fields one of its two MLAs in Meghalaya from Shillong seat

SHILLONG: BJP has fielded party legislator Sanbor Shullai to contest for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat in the ensuing Lok Sabha election.Shullai's name featured in the second list of 36 candidates of the party announced late on Friday night for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.The BJP has fielded three-time legislator from South Shillong, Sanbor Shullai, as the candidate for the elections and he will be contesting from the Shillong parliamentary seat. Meghalaya state BJP president Shibun Lyngdoh, who had been the party candidate for the Shillong LS seat during the last parliamentary elections, said that the name of Shullai was announced by the central leadership of the party.Shullai, a popular grassroots politician had been deputy speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly when he was a member of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) during the previous Congress-led government. He, however, resigned from the NCP prior to the assembly elections in February last year and joined the saffron party.Known for his close contact with his electorate, Shullai was also elected as member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council for five terms. Shullai, who will file his nomination papers soon, will face sitting MP Vincent H Pala and common Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) candidate Jemino Mawthoh of the United Democratic Party (UDP) and other candidates in the contest for the prestigious Shillong parliamentary seat.Though the BJP is a constituent of the National People's Party (NPP)-led ruling MDA in the state, the party has decided to contest the parliamentary polls on its own..
