Five labourers are trapped in a mine in the East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya for the last 12 days.

The narrow entrance mine at Umpleng, 20 km from Khalihriat, the district headquarters of East Jaintia Hills district, was flooded on Sunday following a dynamite explosion.

The Meghalaya Government has now sought the help of the Navy to save the labourers.

A letter has been written by the Government of Meghalaya to the Ministry of Defense.

In which there has been a demand to provide Navy divers to get the labourers out of the mine safely.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that we have written to the Defense Ministry to provide Navy divers to assist in the rescue operation.

Sangma said that the rescue operation is very difficult.

Despite all the efforts of the district administration as well as other agencies including NDRF, no positive result has emerged.

A total of 100 rescuers from NDRF, SDRF and fire service are waiting for the water level to come down to about 10 meters deep, as they cannot operate in that much water.

There was a big accident inside the coal mine in the Rymbai area of East Jaintia Hills earlier in January this year.
