In a press release of the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA), it is said that The Shoton Festival scheduled to hold on 18th April 2018 in Dharamshala, has been postponed as a mark of respect and solidarity with the recent tragic accident in which 23 Indian students killed, when a bus plunged into a deep gorge in Nurpur Himachal on April 10.
Tipa official said,” The rescheduling of the event is to be held from 20th to 25th April, 2018.”
Shoton festival, which celebrates the unique Tibetan artistic heritage of opera, is being organised annually by Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) ,attracting crowds of thousands.
The Shoton festival is a centuries-old Tibetan tradition.
Shoton festival was originally observed in conjunction with the end of the summer retreat of the monastery in Tibet , during which curd is offered to the monks and was then known as Drepung Shoton.
This festival grew into to a fully-fledged festival of Tibetan opera performances.
It was later revived in exile and produced by TIPA for the first time in 1993, at the encouragement and advice of the Dalai Lama.
Many opera troupes from India and Nepal use to participate in this festival, which is a regular feature of Tibetan community in Dharamshala.
The Life of Buddha was performed by the artists of TIPA on the final day of Shoton.
TIPA is a premiere body set up in 1959 in Dharamshala for the preservation of Tibetan culture and performance.
