Rs 1,217 crore loss due to rains in Himachal Pradesh, 264 dead

SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh has suffered a loss of Rs 1,217.29 crores due to excessive rains, flash floods and cloudburst during the current monsoon season. For the first time, landslide sensors were installed at Kotrupi and Aut in Mandi district for early warning to avoid any untoward incidents, he added.The public works department suffered a maximum loss of Rs 735 crore due to rains — damage to roads, bridge and retaining walls among others. The agriculture and horticulture sectors also suffered a loss of Rs 88.81 crore, while power sector suffered a loss to the tune of Rs 24.50 crore.He said the state government has provided Rs 229.64 crore for carrying immediate restoration and repair works of the damaged infrastructures in the state and would soon submit a memorandum of losses and damages to the Centre for financial assistance. The CM said it had been observed that unplanned dumping of debris was another cause of damage to roads and stressed on the need to identify proper dumping sites to dispose off debris. He also stressed on the need to maintain effective cross drainage and side drainage facilities to ensure proper drainage system.He said the irrigation and public health department had suffered a loss of Rs 328.78 crore by way of damage to several drinking water supply and irrigation schemes due to landslides and heavy rains..
