Kangra with BJP for 10 years, Congress losing hold on old seat

Before Himachal Pradesh was born out of the trifurcation of Punjab, Chamba and Kangra were separate constituencies. Of the three airports in Himachal, one is in Kangra district’s Gaggal village.From 1952 to 1971, only Congress leaders had been elected from the region. Its other demands include a permanent campus of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh, a broadgauge railway line, construction of a Rs 1,000-crore cement plant in Chamba, and cheaper air travel. In the Congress, according to a source in the party, the main ticket contest is between former Himachal Pradesh ministers G S Bali and Sudhir Sharma, and party leader Chander Kumar. In the seven Lok Sabha elections held since 1991, Kangra has swayed towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on five occasions and the Congress twice.Hemmed by the towering Dhauladhar mountain range on the north, this constituency comprises Kangra and Chamba districts of Himachal Pradesh, and had been a Congress stronghold before the Bharatiya Lok Dal’s Durga Chand won it in 1977..
