Summary:

The dam built in 1972 has been receiving water at the rate of 4,000 cusecs which is just not enough, sources said.RM Patel, superintending engineer, Ukai dam, said, “Last year, water inflow in Ukai dam from upstream started only by July-end. Surat: Ukai dam has not been receiving fresh inflow of water and thus South Gujarat could be facing a crisis in near future if things don’t change soon. The reservoir has a capacity to hold 7414 of water. We hope this to happen this year too.”The dam gives 4,000 million cubic metres (MCM) of water for irrigation, 300 MCM to industries and 600 MCM for drinking purposes in the region in a year. At present, the water level in the dam is 297 feet and until it gets filled up to at least 325 feet, approximately 80 per cent of its capacity, it will be difficult to provide water from it to people throughout the year..
