SMIMER ragging case: Five students suspended

Surat: The anti-ragging committee of Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research (SMIMER) on Friday suspended five students and issued a stern warning to another in connection with cross-complaints about ragging filed by them. Their behaviour has caused mental trauma and physical injury to students. Groups of students from surgery and orthopaedic departments had clashed with each other over transferring of a patient to another ward of the hospital and later filed complaints of ragging against each other on October 9.SMIMER dean Dr Kalpana Desai told TOI, “Offenders have been punished for behaving badly. The action has been taken as per UGC guidelines.”Raj Parmar, third year resident doctor, and Ankit Khadi, second year resident doctor, both of orthopaedic department, were suspended from all academic activities for six months.Mitesh Patel, Dhawnil Tara and Salin Shah, second year resident doctors, both of orthopaedic department, were suspended from all academic activities for one month.Hitesh Patel, second year resident doctor of surgery department, who had filed a cross-complaint against the five resident doctors of orthopaedic department, was given a stern warning and will have to work under the strict observation of the head of the department.The anti-ragging committee gave a written statement to Varachha police station about the issue but without mentioning any names of the students..
