On Tuesday two incidents of fire was reported at industrial units of Surat city, it came after smoke was observed in the vicinity.

Fire officials said that at about 6.45 am a morning walker alerted the fire department about smoke emanating from a unit selling and servicing electronic appliances on Udhna-Magdalla Road.

Firemen from Majura Gate, Maan Darwaja and Navsari Bazaar fire stations were pressed into action to control the blaze.

“The unit was locked when we reached there, but smoke was coming out through gaps between shutters.

When we broke open the unit, the thick smoke that had accumulated inside came out,” said a fire official.

“Once the unit was exhausted of smoke, our staff could enter and sprinkle water,” he added.

As firemen doused the blaze after some minutes, the owners of the neighbouring units heaved a sigh of relief as the units were packed close to each other.

“We ensured that the fire did not spread to the neighbouring units, but the unit which had caught fire was completely gutted,” the fire official said.

All electronic appliances including refrigerators, air-conditioners, televisions, computers and furniture were destroyed in the blaze.

The other incident took place in a diamond cutting and polishing unit in a building in Katargam.

Diamond polishing machines, furniture and air-conditioners were destroyed, fire officials said.

“We suspect that short-circuit could be the reason for fire at both places.

Since both units were shut, no injuries have taken place,” fire officials said.
