Heavy rains add to Barvi, Bhatsa stock

THANE: Heavy rains in the catchment areas of the two major reservoirs of Thane over the last one week have helped to add nearly 1,44,000 million litres of water, which is equal to the daily water requirement of Thane city for nearly nine months.The city requires around 485 mld water and the supply is drawn by several agencies primarily from Bhatsa and Barvi dams. The reservoirs will be able to reach the overflow mark soon if the good rains continue in the catchment areas,” said an engineer from the irrigation department, Thane circle.Meanwhile, Andra dam in Pune that also contributes to the supply in Ulhas river basin has recorded around 30% stock. Meanwhile, irrigation officials said that heavy rains in the catchment areas will also activate the springs around the reservoirs which will provide enough water to supply water to the weirs that will temporarily stop dependence on the dams.As per the irrigation department, nearly 144 mcm volume of water was collectively added in the Bhatsa and Barvi dams, thanks to the heavy rainfall recorded over the weekend in its catchment areas.Simply put, around 1,44,000 ml water has been stored that could easily suffice the requirements of the industrial and residential usage of Thane city for nearly 296 days or around nine months..
