Mugged girl scared to commute by train

THANE: An 18-year-old collegian from Ambernath who was robbed and attacked by a mugger on a train in broad daylight on Friday told her family on Sunday that is too scared to travel alone by train. Her family is worried as to how to convince her and make her cast her fear aside. The family has for now decided not to send the girl and her sister, who studies in the same college, to attend classes for the next few days.The girls' father is a working professional while their mother is a homemaker and it will be impossible for them to escort them to and from college everyday.Speaking to TOI, the mugged girl's maternal uncle said his niece is still to come out of the trauma. We will have to wait for a few more days till they recover from the trauma," he said.The family said they expect policemen to take corrective steps and ensure that their presence is felt on railway platforms as that would automatically discourage such thefts, especially in broad daylight.The railway police claimed they have adequate presence at stations, but said that they will ensure more visibility of uniformed personnel to make commuters feel secure.The 20-year-old accused, Sohel Ansari, who is from Amrut Nagar in Mumbra, was arrested for the theft has been remanded in police custody till August 29 by a railway court.Senior inspector at Thane railway police station, Rajendra Shirtode, said the accused has a few theft cases in his name..
