12 arrested for godown thefts, syndicate busted

THANE: The city police busted a syndicate involved in a series of thefts at godowns located along the Panvel-Mumbra road and recovered stolen booty worth Rs 30 lakh from the 12 arrested accused.The police said that in the last two months there have been several cases of break-ins at godowns.The material that was being stolen was mainly Xerox machines as well as metal sheets and also cereals which were transported in tempos and sold off, said D S Swamy, deputy commissioner of police (zone-1).It was on November 27, 2018, that a complaint was registered about new 10 Xerox machines being stolen from a business godown at Sheel Daighar police station and over 1,200 iron sheets stolen from the same place on December 18, 2018.Based on a tip-off that some of the accused were carrying stolen Xerox machines in a tempo towards Gujarat to be sold, a team of Shil Daighar police led by senior inspector Mangesh Sawant, trapped the accused and busted the two gangs.The arrested accused led to the recovery of other stolen material as well as two receivers for taking the stolen properties.The police also seized stolen goods and two tempos used in the theft totally valued at Rs 30.11 lakh in both the crimes, said Swami..
