Summary:

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government has decided to launch flood mapping for four rivers and Kuttanad area, which is highly prone to floods due to the region’s below-thesea-level altitude. In the aftermath of the recent floods, the state has decided to prepare inundation maps for a larger period and gravity. The initiative, which is a joint effort of the Centre and the state, will be done for the entire state. However, the recommendation in CWC report that state should explore increasing storage basins in Periyar, Pamba and Achankovil is unlikely to be considered by the state because of the density of population, sources in the water resources department said. “DRIP and NHP are projects under which the state plans to take up works related to hydrology, early warning systems, integrated reservoir operations and flood mapping,” a top official said.In addition, officials from National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA) and National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) are represented in the flood mapping regional committee for the their technical inputs..
