Summary:

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday handed over a cheque for Rs 50 lakh as compensation, ordered by the Supreme Court, to former Isro scientist Nambi Naryanan falsely accused of espionage. “It was 24 years ago that police officers came to my home and took me saying that DIG has called, what followed was wrongful imprisonment, malicious prosecution, humiliation and torture,” he said. Speaking at the function, the chief minister said those behind the conspiracy of the Isro spy case should be brought to book through an impartial probe.Errant officials who tortured him will be made liable and the state is looking at legal recourse, he said. “The massive people’s participation in the event is a clear testimony to their interest in dispensation of justice to a scientist who was tortured,” Vijayan said.He said, based on the court order, the state could have credited Rs 50 lakh compensation to Nambi Narayan’s account, but decided that handing it over in a formal function was the best way to honour a prominent scientist, who was forced to suffer the humiliation and torture in a case that totally devastated his career and life. The court order is a clear indication that political parties and investigating agencies miserably failed in conducting an impartial probe.Wishing him well, CM applauded Narayanan for his indomitable courage, determination with years of toil and sacrifice to fight such a fake case to its culmination.Accepting the compensation, Nambi Narayanan said Pinarayi Vijayan is the only CM who was convinced that spy case was totally false..
