3,000 mentally ill people await rehabilitation

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There are around 3,000 inmates who are cured but still stranded in mental health centres across the state, abandoned by their relatives or the society and awaiting rehabilitation. The report was tabled in the assembly on Tuesday.The mental health centre at Kuthiravattom in Kozhikode has the largest number of such inmates, the committee chairman said. And, half of them are languishing in the three major government mental health centres.The alarming figure was disclosed by MLA V K Ebrahim Kunju , who is the chairman of the assembly committee entrusted to submit a report on development of government mental health centres in Thiruvananthapuram Thrissur and Kozhikode . But the department has already initiated several measures to rehabilitate such patients in mental health care centres,” said social justice department director Jafar Malik The department has identified 81 mentally ailing persons who are either under trial or convicted and who need rehabilitation, said Malik. A couple of years ago, the government was able to rehabilitate 121 persons who got cured from three main centres with the help of these NGOs.“We have a scheme, under which the NGOs will get a government grant for undertaking rehabilitation of people who get relieved from mental health centres..
