Thiruvananthapuram: Phase two of station development on cards

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station might undergo a second phase of development as Engineering Project (India) Ltd (EPIL), a government of India enterprise, has approached the railways to redevelop the station by enhancing available infrastructure facilities. According to Ajay Kaushik, station director of Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station, the preliminary discussions were held with EPIL and they were asked to submit a proposal. Thiruvananthapuram Central is among the eight stations to be redeveloped by EPIL through a consultancy . On commercial front, retail mall and commercial office centre, budget hotel and multilevel parking are proposed.The proposal also mentions about shifting the coach maintenance activities from Thiruvananthapuram Central to Nemam, duly providing a dedicated line between both stations. "The feasibility report needs to be approved by divisional railway manager," said Kaushik.Increasing platform capacity to 30 to 35 bogies, provision of more foot-over-bridges and escalators, fully-covered platforms, are some of the work proposed as part of redevelopment..
