A woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant at a resort in Kerala`s Wayanad district.

The incident took place on Saturday and the woman was trampled to death by the elephant while she sleeping in a tent at the resort in Elimpileri, near Meppadi in Wayanad district.

The woman, Shahana Sathar, head of the psychology department at the Darunnujoom College of Arts and Science in Perambra at Kozhikode, had come to the resort with two family members and they were staying in a tent, when the animal attacked.

The resort is located on the forest fringe and the area is frequented by wild elephants.

Upon hearing the trumpeting sound of a wild elephant, the victim and two others came out of their tent and were attacked.

While two others managed to run away to safety, the woman was killed.

Though the woman was rushed to a hospital, her life could not be saved.

"Shahana was sleeping with her relatives in one of the tents at the resort.

She was attacked by the wild elephant on her way back after going to the restroom," the owner of the homestay said.

"She fell while running away from the elephant and the jumbo trampled her to death," he said.

The forest department officials, however, denied the claims of homestay owner and said that they suspect the woman died at the spot.

The post-mortem report stated that Shahana`s internal organs were broken.

There were bruises on the back of the head and on many parts of the body and injuries to the internal organs are believed to be the primary cause of death.
