Anti-plastic drive: Trichy Corporation collects Rs 98,000 as fine

TRICHY: In a synchronised penalisation drive, the Trichy City Corporation (TCC) on Monday collected a sum of Rs 98,600 as penalty from offenders who were caught using banned plastic products. The drive was carried out in all the four zones.Four teams comprising sanitary officials conducted raids and seized around 638kg of banned plastic products, mostly plastic carry bags that were less than 50 microns in thickness.“The surprise inspections went on for about four hours in all the commercial streets. Fine amounting to Rs 98,600 was collected on the spot,” said an official with the sanitary department of the TCC.The official said such synchronised penalisation drive would be carried out every week to bring down the usage of banned plastic products.Earlier, in a solid waste management (SWM) exhibition held by the civic body, traders were asked to identify the best among the alternatives to plastic carry bags -- like cloth bags and jute bags.It is to be noted that Times of India on Sunday carried a report ---- highlighting the lack of plastic ban enforcement..
