Only 10 out of 18 UPHCs in Trichy city are functioning in a full-fledged manner. Though October recorded the highest number of deliveries at the UPHCs in the city, it still constituted only 54 out of a total of 548 PHC deliveries in the district.There are a total of 20 UPHCs in the district out of which 18 are within the corporation limits. Trichy: Though the health department is planning to promote deliveries at PHCs, the functioning of many of the Urban Primary Health Centres is affected due to staff crunch. Sources said that man power shortage was the main reason for 44% of the UPHCs not functioning properly, which in turn resulted in the number of deliveries to be very less compared to the rural areas. "Currently, we’re in the process of recruiting staff nurses, lab technicians and sanitary workers," the source said.Another official from the health department said that since there are several slum pockets within and on the outskirts of the city, expectant mothers from those localities would not face hassle if all the 18 UPHCs started to function..
