Jallikattu at Suriyur leaves 38 injured

Trichy: As many as 38 people sustained injuries in a jallikattu event held in Suriyur village near Trichy on Wednesday.Organized on the second day of the Tamil month of Thai, this is the first jallikattu of this season in Trichy district.The bull-taming event started at 8am and went on till 3pm. A total 260 bull-tamers and 506 bulls participated in the event.Out of the total 38 people who were injured, 10 were admitted to hospitals.Rewards ranging from a motorcycles, bicycles, furniture, gold and silver coins were given to successful bull-tamers. All the participating bulls were given a token reward apart from a brass lamp.K Balakrishnan from K K Nagar, who along with his children were witnessing jallikattu for the first time lauded the arrangements made for the public.Member of the organising committee, S Raja Manikandan said the venue was changed this year to a dry village tank spread across 100 acres.“This helped us provide adequate space for more than 6,000 spectators who came to witness the event,” he said.Trichy MP P Kumar presented a motorcycle as prize for the best bull-tamer, Govindan.Thiruverumbur MLA Mahesh Poyyamozhi gave away a gold ring to Mohan who had tamed over six bulls..
