6 tonnes of banned plastic seized

Trichy: The Trichy Corporation has confiscated about six tonne of banned plastic products during a surprise inspection carried out in Gandhi market vicinity in Ariyamangalam zone on Tuesday. As many as 60 shops were levied with penalties totalling Rs 12,300 for circulating and stocking the banned plastic products.Meanwhile, locals complained to the corporation officials about a private godown distributing plastic carry bags and other banned products to nearby shops. A private godown, which was reportedly involved in the circulation of banned plastic products was broke open in which at least Rs 5 lakh worth plastics were seized.Civic body sources said the Ariyamangalam zone was informed about clandestine sale of banned plastic carry bags in Gandhi market and nearby vicinity.Officials subsequently carried out the surprise inspection in the market and the adjacent Big bazaar street localities in which about a tonne of banned plastic products, mostly carry bags were seized. We had to break it open as the person-in-charge for the godown was unable to be tracked. The godown in Big Bazaar street, which was found locked was broke open by the officials in the presence of revenue department officials including Trichy town VAO M Kumaravel and Gandhi market police personnel.“About five tonne of banned plastic products were recovered from the private godown after breaking open the lock..
