Summary:

This time, however, the royal family went eco-friendly and immersed the idol in Sunken Garden in front of the palace. Vadodara: The royal Gaekwad family had to break its decade-old tradition of immersing Ganesha idol of the Lakshmi Vilas Palace in Sursagar pond as it is being renovated.Every year the maharaja of the erstwhile Baroda state used to go till the feet of Lord Shiva’s statue in the middle of Sursagar pond and immerse the idol. The garden was designed by German horticulturist Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel during the time of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III.The idol was taken around the palace in a ‘palkhi’ along with a procession of traditional musicians and members of royal family before it was immersed.Like the Gaekwads, many Barodians who had installed idols in their homes and residential societies and buildings took to eco-friendly immersions in large vessels, drums or water tanks..
