Varanasi holds 'Gully cricket' to create awareness among voters

VARANASI: 'Gully cricket' as a tool to motivate electors was held at Chet Singh fort on the bank of Ganga on Thursday evening. SVEEP is designed according to the socio-economic, cultural and demographic profile of the state as well as history of electoral participation in previous rounds of elections and learning.Each police station has been given the responsibility of holding gully cricket in its area with active public participation. The timing of one-hour match is from 7pm to 8pm to be held on an interval of a day.Beginning from Bhelupur police station area the gully cricket will cover other police stations including Sigra, Adampur, Dashashwamedh, Cantt, Kotwali, Chowk, Luxa, Mahila Thana, Jaitpura, Chetganj, Lanka, Maduadih, Sarnath, Ramnagar and Shivpur. There are 16 police stations in city areas. A series of such events will be held by the police department in association with district administration in different parts of the city till February 13.According to the SSP Nitin Tiwari, to create awareness among voters the gully cricket is being held under Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) in each police station area of the city.The SVEEP is a programme of multi interventions through different modes and media designed to educate citizens, electors and voters about the electoral process in order to increase their awareness and participation in the electoral processes..
