Summary:

The study found that the frequency of birth asphyxia was 10.7%. The problem arises during antepartum, the period before childbirth, in most cases. Of the 540 admissions made to the neonatal care unit at a hospital in Vizianagaram district, 58 were found to be suffering from birth asphyxia and three of them died. The study attributed high rates of birth asphyxia to intrapartum causes, issues arising during childbirth, and lack of neonatal resuscitation at the time of delivery. It called for trained persons for neonatal resuscitation, and a pediatrician’s presence at every delivery, especially in high risk cases. While the frequency is consistent with the national data, between nine and 13%, the cause of asphyxiation is different. Vijayawada: Despite antenatal care, including checkups during pregnancy and institutional deliveries, 22.9% infants admitted to neonatal intensive care units are dying due to birth asphyxia, reveal data.Birth asphyxia is a condition in which the newborn suffers oxygen deprivation during the birth process to leading to brain damage. There is an urgent need to employ trained neonatal resuscitation personnel and provision of necessary equipment and medications at the time of delivery in maternity hospitals to ensure the number is reduced, suggests a study by three doctors at a hospital in Vizianagaram. The six-month-long study was published in the quarterly medical journal of the Dr NTR Health University..
