Tata Trusts to support more fishermen

The number of beneficiaries which is now 7,000 families would be raised to two lakh by 2020, Tata Trusts Lead, Open Source Fisheries Karthik Ramesh told reporters. He said under their Open Source Fisheries Initiative (OSF) they were keen on promoting inland fisheries and help fishermen realise sustainable fishing for a better livelihood by involving the State Fisheries Department and partner NGOs. more-inTata Trusts, which has been extending technological support by establishing 179 nursery ponds in the State to produce 2.1 fingerlings during past two years, has decided to extend the benefit to more areas. He said their focus area was on knowledge creation and dissemination, ecosystem development and market linkages across the country. At present, the project is covered in Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Anantapur and Kurnool districts by helping fishermen to develop 179 ponds in an area of 15,000 acres in 190 villages to raise fingerlings and growing adult fish for sale in the market..
