The Central Government has changed the name of the Khel Ratna Award. Now it will be known as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. Earlier this award used to be in the name of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave this information through a tweet.
The PM said in one of his tweets on Friday that there was a demand to change the name of Khel Ratna for a very long time. Respecting the sentiments of the people, it has been decided to change the name. PM Modi has written 'Jai Hind' at the end of his tweet. If the name of Rajiv Gandhi is changed, the Congress party can question this move of the government.
I have been getting many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. I thank them for their views.— Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) August 6, 2021
Respecting their sentiment, the Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award!
