Kolkata is all set to get a tram library; the first of its kind

The specially designed tram library will have books and magazines including those on competitive examination such as civil services.

In a first of its kind Kolkata is all set to launch a tram library, high officials stated on Wednesday. The specially designed tram library will have books and magazines including books related to competitive exams such as civil services, WBCS, GRE or GMAT in order to attract reader from various educational institutions along its route as stated by West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) managing director Ranjanvir Singh Kapur.

Kapur further stated ‘’the tram library, being introduced by the WBTC that oversees India’s only functional tramways, is a special tram with books, magazines which can be read while travelling on tram’’.

The tram library which is all se to be inaugurated on Thursday will travel regularly between Shyambazar and Esplanade, gallivanting 4.5km through the city’s education hub College Street. There are at least 30 educational institutions along or near the route including the Calcutta University, Presidency University, Scottish Church College, Hindu School, Hare School and Calcutta Girl’s School.

Some various specialty of tramcar includes- it will give access to free Wi-Fi, will help passenger read e-books apart from laying their hands on books in the library. The collection will be updated regularly.

As per Kapur ‘’we are planning book reading sessions, book launches and literary festivals in the tram library in the upcoming future’’ stating the project as dream come true which will give new dimension to the city’s electric tram service which is boing passengers since 1902.
