Minor sisters attempt suicide citing poverty

On Wednesday around 8.30 a.m., while their guardians had left home on work, the girls tried to hang themselves from an iron beam in their house. Dr. Veerabhadraiah, surgeon, Tumakuru district government hospital, told The Hindu, "The elder girl was unconscious when she was brought to the hospital but by evening she gained consciousness. The siblings are currently undergoing treatment in the Tumakuru district government hospital. The younger girl told officials that they wanted to end their lives due to poverty. They are being raised by an aunt and uncle who sell hairpins, ribbons, combs and other goods for a living.

The siblings had lost their mother a decade ago, and their father abandoned them soon after. They are being raised by an aunt and uncle who sell hairpins, ribbons, combs and other goods for a living. Fortunately, some neighbours, who were passing by, were able to save them before it was too late. The siblings are currently undergoing treatment in the Tumakuru district government hospital. District Child Protection Officer Vasanthi Uppar told The Hindu, "The older girl’s condition is critical and she is on ventilator support, but the younger one is recovering." The officer handed over ?10,000 to the children’s guardians for medical expenses. The family belongs to a nomadic community named Shillekyata. The girls are enrolled in a government school. The younger girl told officials that they wanted to end their lives due to poverty. According to the police, she said that though her uncle and aunt, who are childless, were looking after them, the family struggles to have even one meal a day. Dr. Veerabhadraiah, surgeon, Tumakuru district government hospital, told The Hindu, "The elder girl was unconscious when she was brought to the hospital but by evening she gained consciousness. However, she is not out of danger. Both are in the Intensive Care Unit.”
