Police station death: succour to kin

After making enquiry, the police told Bheem Singh to get his Aadhaar card for letting him off on bail/surety. However, he suffered cardiac arrest while attending nature’s call in the police station's toilet and collapsed. The State Government on Monday announced ?5 lakh ex gratia to the family of Bheem Singh, who died of cardiac arrest on the Mangalhat police station premises on Sunday. The Home Minister explained that Bheem Singh of Raheempura was summoned to the police station following lodging of complaint of physical attack against him by one Dileep. After an inquest conducted by the magistrate concerned a post mortem was conducted on the body, in which it was revealed that cardiac arrest was the reason for his death.

During the discussion on voting of demands for grants in the Assembly on Monday, Home Minister Nayini Narsimha Reddy stated that it was not custodial death as being alleged in some sections. However, on the request of the local Corporator and keeping in view the poor economic status of the person’s family the government had decided to pay ex gratia and also to examine the possibility of providing some employment to one of the dependants. The Home Minister explained that Bheem Singh of Raheempura was summoned to the police station following lodging of complaint of physical attack against him by one Dileep. However, he suffered cardiac arrest while attending nature’s call in the police station's toilet and collapsed. He was rushed to Osmania Hospital immediately, where he was declared brought dead. After an inquest conducted by the magistrate concerned a post mortem was conducted on the body, in which it was revealed that cardiac arrest was the reason for his death. The closed-circuit (CC) television camera footage of the police station was also given to the media, in which it was clear that Bheem Singh was not beaten up by police as being alleged, the Home Minister said adding that further action would be taken as per the guidelines of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
