JAMSHEDPUR: To avert outbreak of forest fires , the Dhalbhum forest division has evolved a multi-pronged strategy, including financial empowerment of the village-level joint forest management groups, and swift action on precautionary alerts of the remote sensing satellite of the Forest Survey of India (FSI) related to patches where potential fires occur. "The joint forest management committees work in close coordination with Gram Vikas Samities of the forest area of the division.They have been given nearly Rs 3 lakh to arrange fire-fighting essentials such was water, bucket and sand," said Alam. "The remote sensing satellite is useful in collecting images of mounds of dry leaves in the forest cover besides digital images of even small forest fires are available on the website," said divisional forest officer (DFO), Saba Alam.He said precautionary steps are being taken in response to each of the alerts that come along with the digital images of FSI.
