Pune cop runs over two on Nerul footpath, held

Navi Mumbai: A constable attached to Manchar police station in Pune has been arrested for killing two men in Nerul on Sunday. The deceased were identified as Bhupendra Jagdishprakash Yogi (45), a resident of Ghatkopar, and Shankar Lalbahadur Vishwakarma (55), a resident of sector 20 in Nerul. According to the police, Karande’s wife, who is staying with her parents in Nerul, is pursuing law degree. Ramesh Gulab Karande (32) was driving his friend’s Swift car and had come to Nerul to meet his wife when he ran over three people having tea on footpath, killing two on the spot. The car then rammed into a closed shop damaging its shutter. The deceased were identified as Bhupendra Jagdishprakash Yogi (45), a resident of Ghatkopar, and Shankar Lalbahadur Vishwakarma (55), a resident of sector 20 in Nerul. Monu Ramfer Saroj (32), a resident of Ghatkopar, was severely injured, and is undergoing treatment at DY Patil Hospital. According to the police, Karande’s wife, who is staying with her parents in Nerul, is pursuing law degree. “After entering Nerul from Palm Beach Road, he was going towards sector 20 when he noticed the road crowded. He intended to apply brakes, but accidentally hit the accelerator. The car was a test-drive car that his friend had got from a company,” said an official from Nerul police station, adding, “Yogi, who works as a watchman in Ghatkopar, had come to meet his friends Vishwakarma and Saroj, who work in Nerul. The trio, after their duty hours, were having tea on the footpath.” Karande was arrested under Sections 304 (A) for causing death by negligence, 279 for rash driving, 337 for causing hurt by act endangering life, 338 for causing grievous hurt, and 427 for mischief causing damage of the IPC and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act. The police have, however, ruled out drunk driving. Karande was produced before court and granted bail on Monday.
