Stressing on the need to create infrastructure for surgeries, Padma awardee Dr Devi Prasad Shetty on Saturday said that nearly 40 million people die every year due to lack of access to safe surgery. Delivering the 39th Vikram Sarabhai Memorial Lecture here, Shetty said: “India requires 65 million surgeries a year, against which, all the hospitals put together perform only 25-26 million surgeries per year”, he said, adding that 40 million people suffer and gradually die every year due to lack of access to safe surgery. He said nursing was a good profession but it is a dying profession because of the limited opportunities in that field. “With work experience in ICU, a nurse would not be considered qualified to prescribe a pill”, he said, adding that the government should create structured training programmes for nurses.
