AIIMS Bhubaneswar opens CSSD for infection control in hospital

BHUBANESWAR: AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Monday inaugurated the newly built Central Sterile Supply Department ( CSSD ) to control infection in the hospital operation theatres (OTs) by providing sterile instruments and other accessories required for an average of 200 major surgeries per day.The CSSD built at a cost of Rs 10 crore is considered as the heart of a hospital for infection control and quality of the treatment. Now the hospital is conducting 30 operations per day and it uses small machines to sterile the instruments and other materials. Functioning and maintenance of this facility will be done by qualified CSSD technicians trained by the engineers from Germany, he added.The institution is also planning to provide special training and upgraded knowledge to the CSSD technicians of the surrounding hospitals in the eastern zone of the country. It has three separate zones dirty, clean and sterile zones for precise unidirectional movement of various instruments.Sachidananda Mohanty, medical superintendent of the AIIMS Bhubaneswar, said this state of the art facility will cater to the need of upcoming 25 modular OTs in addition to the other requirement of the hospital.
