Folk music needs to be revived in society: Malini

It has become more personal and self-centric rather than focusing on community- the spirit captured in the folk music.“Classical music was easily patronized by royal families, while folk music found no such patron as its real patrons were common people, who moved away from it with urbanization and modernization of families,” Awasthi said. Indore: Folk music, which is the mother of classical music, needs to be revived in society and should not be looked down upon by people, thumri singer Malini Awasthi said on the concluding day of Sanghi Smriti Sangeet Samaroh.While addressing media persons after her performance of thumri, Awasthi said, “Folk songs were a part of people’s lifestyle and I am deeply disappointed that it is evaluated at a lower rung as compared to classical music.”She said that earlier, folk music was seen in films too, but now it is no more a part of them.
