Traditional Indian med system to be included in WHO module

Jaipur: It is for the first time, Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani systems have been included in World Health Organisation’s (WHO) second traditional medicine module of International Classification of Diseases (ICD). The ICD provides a common vocabulary for recording, reporting and monitoring health problems internationally.It will come as a major boost for the Indian systems of healthcare. Although millions of people use traditional medicine worldwide, it has never been classified in this system.WHO pointed out that international standardization by including traditional medicine within the ICD allows for measuring, counting, comparing, formulating questions and monitoring over time. Although some of the countries have had national classification systems for many years, information from such systems has not been standardised or made available globally. She said that Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani systems have been included in 2nd traditional medicine module of ICD Chapter-11.Officials said that ICD-11 will be presented at the World Health Assembly in May, 2019 for adoption by member states, and will come into effect on January 1, 2022.According to the WHO, the new ICD includes new chapters, one on traditional medicine..
