Four income tax officers arrested for `favouring' private companies

NEW DELHI: Probing a major corruption scandal in the income tax department , the CBI on Friday arrested four income tax officers (ITOs) for allegedly favouring private companies in their tax assessment The agency also filed a chargesheet against a principal commissioner of the I-T department, Tapas Kumar Dutta , and 13 others in connection with the same case. Dutta allegedly issued favourable orders in the case of private companies, who already paid huge bribe, which has been stashed with a private person. Dutta, posted at Ranchi, was arrested last month by the agency for alleged irregularities.On Friday , CBI arrested four I-T officers, Ranjit Kumar Lal, Sunil Kumar Gupta, both posted at Ranchi, Tarun Roy , posted at Koderma and Vinod Kumar Pal, posted at Hazaribagh. It has been alleged that the I-T officials, businessman, CA and some entry operators connived for getting income tax files of their different assessee companies transferred from Kolkata Hazaribagh to Ranchi for providing undue favour to those assessees, who have been charged with heavy tax liabilities. CBI spokesperson said that the officers, in connivance with the principal commissioner, were allegedly providing undue favours to businessmen, who were slapped with heavy tax liabilities, in return for huge bribes..
