Village chief, two others killed by 'cattle smugglers' in Meghalaya

SHILLONG: Meghalaya police arrested six people suspected to be cow smugglers for allegedly killing three people, including a village headman, and injuring three others at Amlanai village in Trangblang near the Bangladesh border.Village headman Thomlin Surong, village secretary Hamboi Langshiang and a village council member Shan Khongiong, along with three others, were on their way back to the Amlanai village from Amlarem when they were stopped and attacked with "lethal weapons". Earlier, the accused were rescued by cops after angry villagers apprehended them while they were trying to smuggle ca- ttle to Bangladesh. It could not be confirmed if the headman was part of the mob. "While Surong, Langshiang and Khongiong were killed on the spot, the three others were hospitalised at Jowai in critical condition," SP (West Jaintia Hills) Vivek Syiem said.On Saturday, three people - brothers George Remingson Manner and George Hemingson Manner, and their cousin Lasawki Manner - surrendered before Amlarem police. Later, police arrested another brother, George William Kerry Manner, their friend Khamti Myrlia and cousin Tam Manner.Sources said the headman had confronted a member of the Manner family about their link with a cattle smuggling ra- cket a few days ago..
