Bad weather delays testing of ILS at Surat airport

It was in February, the Spice Jet had cancelled its Surat-Delhi morning flight due to the fog at the Delhi airport and the absence of ILS at the Surat airport. The installation of ILS at the runway has been completed and it is referred for flight trial, which is getting delayed due to bad weather. Last week, the Spice Jet flight from Kolkata to Surat was diverted to Ahmedabad due to bad weather, the Air Asia flight from Bengaluru to Surat was diverted to Indore and the Delhi-Surat flight of Spice Jet was again diverted to Ahmedabad.Airport director, Sanjay Kumar Panigrahi told TOI, “The ILS is in place at the airport and they were shifted after the 615 meter displacement at the Vesu-end. Surat: While the incidents of flights getting diverted to other airports has increased due to heavy rains and bad weather, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is unable to test the instrument landing system (ILS) at Surat airport as bad weather continued to hamper operations.The ILS has not been operational at Surat since last five months, after they were shifted from the Vesu-end of the airport after the directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) had ordered the displacement of 615 metre of runway due to the building height obstruction in the flight path of the runway.In the last one week, about three to four incidents of flight diversion have been reported at the Surat airport. It is just one step away for the final approval.” Panigrahi added, “The other communication system and the air traffic control (ATC) officials are manually guiding the pilots for safe landing at the airport.”In absence of ILS on the airport, the flights are getting delayed and cancelled due to the fog and heavy rains situation at the airport..
