Accept land tax from all, collectors told

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In the wake of the suicide of a farmer in Kozhikode in connection with land tax issues, the government has strictly instructed all district collectors to accept the basic land tax on any land from the landholder, irrespective of land type or category, unless it is government land.In a circular issued on Saturday by land revenue commissioner A T James to all the district collectors, accessed by TOI, it has been clearly instructed that the tax should be accepted temporarily, even if the land is not surveyed and the extent clearly laid out.The 12-point instructions also say that the remittance from any person who is coming to the village office for paying the land tax should be accepted and receipt should be issued on the same day, and in unavoidable circumstances, on the next day. "Under no circumstances, the village authorities should make the citizens approaching the offices for various needs, made to visit the office for a purpose, more than two times," it said.The circular also instructed that if there were any genuine reasons for the village official for not accepting the tax, it should be recorded the applicant should be informed. The village official should instruct the tahasildar about his decision and the tahasildar should examine the matter and should intimate the applicant.All the deputy tahasildars in each district have been asked to inspect the villages under them mandatorily once in a month, and a report on the assessment of tax collection should be submitted to the tahasildar..
