Sri Lankan navy arrests 13 Indian fishermen

Trichy/Ramanathapuram: The Sri Lankan navy on Wednesday arrested 13 Indian fishermen for poaching in the territorial waters of the island nation. Two boats from Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district with eight fishermen were apprehended by the Sri Lankan navy on Wednesday night when they were fishing near Kachatheevu. While five of the fishermen belonged to Pudukottai district, the remaining eight hailed from Ramanathapuram district.The Sri Lankan navy personnel on board a fast attack craft surrounded a fishing trawler near the Karaitheevu Island. As many as 600 fishermen in 160 trawlers set out to sea from Jagadhapattinam on Wednesday morning.The arrested fishermen were taken to SLNS Elara at Karinagar. They were also put through a medical test.They were handed over to the Kankasanthurai police for further action on Thursday.The Sri Lankan navy website mentioned that they also arrested eight more Indian fishermen who had ventured from Rameswaram..
