After winning yet another toss in the series and electing to bat, the visitors made a decent start to the mate, their in-form openers; David Warner and Aaron Finch once again looked in mood and played some good shots to set a tone. However, the fall of Finch followed by another important of Smith, the tourist once again dug themselves a deep hole. After their departures, the Aussies struggle began, losing three wickets in a jiffy and were staring down the barrel.

It was the 87-run partnership between Travis Head and Marcus Stoinis which revived their innings a bit but once they departed it was again a struggle for the Aussies. The lower order just failed to get going against the accurate Indian bowling and eventually managed a below-par total.

The Indian spinners were outstanding in the middle overs. The trio of Kuldeep, Jadhav and Patel gave away hunted down four wickets and gave away only 134 runs in their combined 30 overs. In the end, the Australian managed to make 242 in the allotted 50 overs.
