Real Madrid lose again, Barcelona extend lead to 8 points

Real Madrid’s league form has been a major concern, the champions have failed to put together a series of a win this season and the drama continued as they were handed another defeat as Girona clinched a famous 2-1 victory in their first-ever meeting with the Los Blancos.

The result means Zinedine Zidane’s men languishing in third and massive eight points behind arch-rival Barcelona, who did their part at the weekend with a 2-0 win over Athletic.

Real Madrid has the ability to close the gap and challenge for the title but history his against them as no club has ever come back from eight points or more behind to the title, a daunting statistic particularly is given Barcelona’s near-impeccable record thus far.

Zidane for his part remains defiant, stating: "We know we can turn this around. We will have better days and the other teams will drop points too over the season.

"We lost three points unexpectedly [but] we want to win La Liga, it is our day-to-day."

But as they say, records are meant to be broken and neither Zizu nor his Barca counterpart Valverde would rule Madrid out of the title race at this early stage. However, mathematically at least, Madrid are now dependent on their rivals slipping up.
