Telangana Left parties have demanded that ‘Rohith Vemula Act’ be enacted to curb caste-related discrimination in universities, and that the Central Ministers and Vice-Chancellor responsible for dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula’s death be punished severely. A meeting led by CPI(M) unanimously passed a resolution to this effect on Tuesday, on the death anniversary of Rohith. Representatives of the CPI(M), CPI, MCPIU, RSP, CPI(M-L), SUCI and CPI (M-L)-New Democracy participated in the meeting. Such attempts were directed towards protecting those responsible from the provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the note said. To this day, those responsible for his suicide had not been apprehended, while efforts to disprove his dalit status had gained momentum.
