“Do not carry people in goods carriers”

Sometimes, accidents involving goods carriers transporting people have turned fatal. Though Motor Vehicles Act clearly state that goods carriers were meant to transport freight, drivers of such vehicles have been violating it. Drivers of many private goods carriers have been transporting people in their vehicles jeopardising their safety. So, the police organised an awareness meeting with drivers of goods carriers here on Wednesday. Around 125 drivers of goods carriers participated in the meeting that was organised on the instruction of the Commissioner of Police A. Arun.

Sometimes, accidents involving goods carriers transporting people have turned fatal. In a recent fatal accident case reported in Tiruchi, a mini goods carrier transporting a group of people from Samayapuram to Alampattipudur overturned near Madurai Bypass Road causing death of two women. So, the police organised an awareness meeting with drivers of goods carriers here on Wednesday. Around 125 drivers of goods carriers participated in the meeting that was organised on the instruction of the Commissioner of Police A. Arun. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) S. Prabakaran made it clear to the participants that transporting people on goods carriers was an offence. Asking the participants to desist from committing such violation, he warned them that the police would initiate stern action against vehicles found transporting people. The drivers promised to adhere by the rule. The views of the drivers were ascertained at the meeting.
