First Republic Day was celebrated on January 26, 1950. India was declared the Sovereign Democratic Republic exactly at 18 minutes past 10 on the morning of January 26, 1950. Constitution of India, which made India a sovereign, democratic republic, was adopted on November 26, 1949, and it came into effect on January 26, 1950, which is celebrated as Republic Day. From that day, India was no longer a dominion of the British crown.
India’s first president Dr. Rajendra Prasad went to stay at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. As President, Prasad established a tradition of non-partisanship and independence for the office-bearer and retired from Congress party politics.
The treaty was signed in New Delhi by the Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru and the Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan on April 8, 1950. The Liaquat–Nehru Pact or Delhi Pact stated whereby refugees were allowed to return unmolested to dispose of their property, abducted women and looted property were to be returned, forced conversions were unrecognized, and minority rights were confirmed.
