PUNE: The forest department will soon conduct a study to track the movement of wolves in the Baramati area using Geographical Information System (GIS) collars. The study will be done jointly with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), which has been carrying out research on two wolves in the Solapur district’s Nanaj area. Altogether five wolves have been identified and will be fitted with the GIS collars.R K Wankhede, conservator of forests (wildlife) in the Pune division, said, “In Pune, permission was granted two months ago to study the wolves’ movement. Once we track their movement, we can suggest some kind of mitigation measures in these areas,” he said. The official said these animals belong to the forest and need to keep on moving even for genetic diversity to be maintained. When they are passing from one area to another, their movement is affected by linear man-made constructions like roads or canals, which can lead to road accidents..
