The Indonesian based ride-hailing and digital payments firm Gojek is slashing hundreds of jobs as the coronavirus grapples economy. The recent downsizing exercise at the company is expected to affect about 9% of its workforce.

The company said, “Many of the staff reductions hit newer divisions GoLife and GoFood Festivals, Indonesia’s largest startup said in a statement. The household services and dining divisions will shutter in July”

In an internal memo to staff, company CO-CEOs, Andre Soelistyo and Kevin Aluwi said, “Focusing on our core services, shutting down verticals that are no longer viable during this period, and making bold bets on changing customer needs will ensure that we continue making a positive impact on the lives of millions of people while securing future growth.”

Previously, top managers at Gojek had committed to donate a quarter of the salaries for a year in order to support drivers, merchants and other partners.

Gojek is not the only Indonesian unicorn that has been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. A week after its biggest rival Grab, a ride-hailing startup, laid off 5%of its workforce-noting that it would include 300 employees.

Technology companies across the globe have been shedding workers in large numbers since the coronavirus was declared a pandemic three months ago. In Asia, Grab and Oyo Hotels were among the largest startups so far to have culled staff.
