Death toll in Bijapur encounter rises to 13

Three more bodies of Maoists were recovered on Wednesday in Chhattisgarhs Bijapur district where a fierce gun battle took place between security personnel and Naxalites on Tuesday, taking the death toll to 13. During search operation which is still on, the three bodies were found from a dense forest where the fighting took place, police said. "The identities of the dead Naxalites are yet to be ascertained but prima facie it appears that they belonged to the PLGA (Peoples Liberation Guerrilla Army) company no. 2 of Maoists," an official said. On Tuesday, the fighting broke out around 6 am in a forest between Lendra and Korcholi villages. The intermittent firing lasted for a long time and the security forces continued search operations in the area. A light machine gun, a .303 rifle, a 12-bore gun, a large number of grenade launchers and shells and other arms and ammunition were seized from the spot, the police had said. Bijapur district comes under the Bastar Lok Sabha constituency which will go to the polls on April 19.
